written vowel above or below the vowel, the sound "a" is p ronou nced.

In additi on to these, there are also a several spok en vowels which have no written

The two "e\'\' vowels (e and ɛ) are difficult for English speakers to hear and i̅
produce. They differ i n that the "e" sound is made higher i n the front of the mouth with
the teeth very close together, while the teeth are wider apart for the "ɛ" sound and the
tongue is also lower i n the mouth.

I.7 Structure and pronunciation of complex [syllables ][ ]
i̅i̅Ti betan[ orthography separates syllables by a] dot (called a tsēg or tsā) [ ]
immediately foll owi ng each syllable (་) . For example, ག་མ་ (ga̲ m a̲) are two syllabl es
whereas གམ་ (ga̲m) i s only one.
