are hi gher than the low tone but not as high as a high tone.
2. With the exception of ཐ, consonants thati̅are aspirated i n the i nitialposition of
the second syllable, lose their aspiati on i n disyllabic comp སྒྱུou nds. For example
pchanges to b ཚ་ ཕོག་ tshā+ pɔ̅ɔ̀ = tshābɔɔ̀
ch " j ཁ་ཆེ་ k ā+ chē = k āje
ky " gy སྤྱི་ཁྱབ་ jī+ kyə̅b = jīgy əb
k" g དཔར་ ་ཁང་ b r + k āŋ = bārgaŋ
tr" dr བཟོཚེ་གྲ་ so̲ + tra̲ = so̲dra
ts " dz མི་ཚེ་ m i̲+ tsē = m i̲dze (reallybetween
ts and dz)
i̅3. Slot4 consonants i n the first of two syllables are affected differently when part
of disy llabic compounds. For example, while the consonant ག་ nornmally produces a i̅
falli ng tone i n m onosyllab l es (ལག་ is pronounced la̲à) , i n di sy llabic words the " g'" sou nd is
pronouunced, e.g., ལག་པ་ la̲à + bā = la̲gba and སྟག་པ་ dāà + i̅bā = dāgba.
The slot- 4 consonant ང་ nornnally appears in disyllabic words as ŋ, e.g., ཡང་ས་
(ya̲ŋse) , or ཡོངས་རྫོགས་ is pronounced yo̲ŋdzɔɔ̀
The slot- 4 consonants ད་ and ས་ typically are changed fromfalli ng tone when
alone to either long or short tone when part of disy l labic compounds, e.g., རྩེད་མོ་ " dzēè +
mo̲ = dzēēmo.
These rules, however, are not hard aundi̅fast and there are many exceptions and
pronunciation differences even within Lhasa dialect. Thus, the bestadvice for the reader
without ani̅experienced native teacher is to listen to the tape carefully and try to
reproduce its sounds. i̅ i̅ i̅ i̅ i̅ i̅
i̅i̅ 4. A nother typical feature of disyllabic compounds is what i s called regressive
assimi lation. That is to say, when the first syllable of adisyllabic compound ends i n a
vowel or an unpronounced fi nal consonant (for example, a final ད) there is a tendency for
it to pick up the sound of certai n slot- li̅ letters of the second syllable (i e., a "m" or " n'" or
"b" souund) . The slot l letters that do this are མ་, འ་, and བ་ For example,
,
དགེ་འདུན་
ge̲ + dü̲n = gi̲ndün (monk) མ་ ཆོད་མཇལ་ chȫö̀ + jɛ̲ɛ̲ = chȫȫnjɛɛ (religious
visit)

Similarly, disyllabic compoundsinwhich the first syllable endsin ན་ or མ་ and the
the second syllable beginsin a "g" or "k" ཁ་ or ཁ་) typically pick up an "ŋ" souund. For
