Lesson Seven [ 85
locative so that the preceedi ng phrase is written ཤི་བ་ལྟར་དུ་ . Together they mean, "came to
be as i f he were dead." i̅ ཚེ་ 9.
9. The ninth segment consists of three clauses l.
The first clause begi ns with a time phrase meani ng "at about mi dni ght" (ནམ་ཕྱེད་ ཙམ་
ལ)
. ཙམ་ here m odifi es ནམ་ཕྱེད་ to convey thei dea of "about" or "approximately." Thi s is
foll owed by the subject i n the i nstrumental case (ཨ་ཁུ་བསྟན་པས་) and the verb "got uparose"
(ལངས་̅) , here m odifi ed by the adverbial ཁ་ཁར་ (" qui etly si lentlysecretly ") . Thus, "at about
midnight, A gu quietly aurose." i̅ i̅̅ i̅ i̅ i̅
The subject of the next cl ause, A gu, is implicit. Clause two, therefore, begi ns with
along direct object phrase ར་ང་གི་རྩམ་སྐྱེའི་ནང་གི་གཟན་ ༔་རྣམས་ ("the hay and gra ssinside his
own tsamba bag") . This is foll owed by the i ndirect object, "to the donk ey" (བོང་བུར་ ་) , aund
then the active verb "give" (སྟེ་ར་) . i̅ i̅ i̅
Cl ause three starts wi th the direct object phrase "that si ngle l oad of tsam ba or the
rich man" (ཕྱུག་པའི་རྩམ་པ་ཁལ་རྒྱབ་གཅིག་པོ་དེ་) . Next comes theindirect object phrase"to the
inside of (his) own tsamba bag" (ར་ ང་གི་སྐྱེ་མོའི་ནང་དུ་) . Fi nally thei̅active verb "stuffed"
((བརྒྱངས་)
. Thus, " (Agu) stuffed the single load of therich man into his own tsamba bag."
10. The tenth segment consists of four clauses l .
i̅Th e first clause begi ns wi th the timeslot word "after that, " and then the subject i n
the instrumental case (ཨ་ཁུས་) . The object phrase ཕྱུག་པོ་དེའི་རྩམ་སྐྱེ་སྟོང་པ་དེ་ ("that empty bag of
that rich man") occurs next. Following this i s the verb "leave" (བཞག་) and the i ndirect
object "in the hand of a statue of a god" (ལྷ་སྐུའི་ལག་ཏུ་) . Thus, "after that, A gu left the empty
tsamba bag of that rich man ini̅the handof a statue of a god, and. . . ." [ ]
i̅The.second cl ause begi ns with the word ཡང་ ("also" or "agai n") , followed by the
object phrase རྩམ་པ་སྦར་མོ་གང་ ("one handful of tsam ba") , and theactive verb i n the past
tense ཁྱེར་ " ("carriedtook ") . The subject conti nues to be A gu. Thus together they mean,
"also, having taken a handful of tsamba." i̅ i̅ i̅
Clause three again does not mention the subject. It consists only of an active verb
"smear" (བྱུགས་) , and the location of the verbal action, "i nto the m outh of that statue of the
god" (ལྷ་ སྐུ་དེའི་ཁ་ལེ་) . Cl auses two a nd three therefore translate as, "Also, havi ng taken a
handful of tsamba, (he) smeared it on the mouth of the statue of the god." The clause
connector here is "after" (རྗེས་) , so " Also, a er havi ng taken a handful of tsam ba, (he)
smearedit on the mouth of the statue of the god."
