7.14.2 3 Translation
Coming from A fghanistan to Pakistan
(What follows is according to) a cable that aurived at this newspaper office from
Ka achi. In 197.8 , after disturbances arose i n A fghanistan, we came seeki ng refuge i n
Pakistan. When we were walki ng on the road for many days, sometimes we were out of
food and the el derly got sick and died. Not only that, but sometimes ai planes shot (at us)
and ki l l ed m any people. Neverthel ess, when we a rived at the Paki sta n border, the
Pakistan government andrelief agencies compassionately gave us aid in the forn of food,
clothes, m edici nes, etc. Because of this, we be nefited greatly .
i̅A fter we stayed at the border for several months, we were sent to southern
Pakistan for the purpose ofresettli ng all of us. From the time (lit., "when") we arrived
i nitially at the resettlement camp until now, we noti̅only energetically cut down a dense
forest, but we made many new fields and newly built such thi ngs as houses, stores,
schools, and handicraft centers. Not only that, but next year we even plan to build a i̅
hospital. There are now about 10 , 000 A fghanistaun refugees in this resettlement camp in
the south of Pakistan.

l. The first segment consists of the title ཨབ་སྟ་ནི་སི་ཐན་ནས་པ་ཀི་སི་ཐན་བར་ ་དུ་ཡོང་བ་
i̅བར་དུ་ usual ly means "up to" or "until, " and here it is used with ནས་ (in its i̅ ̅
prepositional fu ncti on of " from ") to convey " from " K "up to" V . The subject is impli cit
here so that this transl ates as "the comi ng from V toV."ཚེ་ ཚེ
2. The second segment consists of the sentence འདི་གར་ ་ཚགས་པར་ ་ཁང་དུ་ཁ་ར་ ་ཆི་ནས་གློག་འཕྲིན་འབྱོར་
གསལ།
i̅i̅ This sentence is one of a num ber of standard ways th at newsp aper articles begi n
by i ndicating the sourcei̅of the story. In this case it i nfornls us that the story derives from
ateleg am from Karachi. The first part འདི་གར་ ་ཚགས་པར་ ་ཁང་དུ་ conveys the l ocation of the
verb འབྱོར་ i̅ ("to auri ve") ------ " (it arrived) i n the newspaper office here." The rest of this
segm ent is strai ghtforward until the final word གསལ་ ("clear") . In newsp apers thi s has
com e to mea n "as was stated i n'" or '"accordi ng to'" rather than '"clear.'" Other parallel
ph ases used equivalently i n newspapers are གསལ་ལྟར, དོན་, དོན་དུ་, བརྗོད་ན་, ལྟར་ ་, and དོན་ལྟར་
