a super]atiVe stem. The basic stem is the onewe have frequently encountered, for
example, ཆེན་པོ་ ("big") and མང་པོ་ ("many") . The basic fornn, therefore, is nornmally
disyllabic with the second syllable being པོ་ However, you willrecall that we haVe
encountered "irregu]ar" adjectives that do not take པོ་, for example, གསར་པ་ ("new") and
ཆུང་ཆུང་ ("small") . i̅ i̅ i̅ i̅
As indicated earlier, adjectives follow the noun they modify so that "red book"
becomes "bookred" in Tibetan (དེ་བ་ད་མར་པོ་) . We have also seen that adjectiVesare used
with existential and linking verbs, for example དེབ་དེ་ཆེན་པོ་འདུག། ("That book is big") but
དེབ་དེ་ད་མར་མོ་རེད། ("That book isred") . There is no simple ruleregarding this but, with the
exception of co]ors, adjectiVes nornlally take existential verbs.
When the adjective modifiesa nominal, case endings nornma]ly are attached toit.
For example, སློབ་ཕྲུག་གིས་བཟོས་ས་སོང་། becomes སློབ་ཕྲུག་མང་པོས་བཟོས་སོང་།
a. སློབ་ཕྲུག་མང་པོའི་ནང་ནས་ཁོ་ལ་བྱ་དགའ་ j ཐོབ་པ་རེད།
Fromamongmaunystudents, hewonaprize.
b. མི་མང་པོར་རྟ་འདུག།
Many peop]e have horses. (To many people, there exist horses.)
10.3.2 The comparatiVefornmofadjectiVes
i̅ Thei̅compaative stem (adj. comp.) of most adjectiVes is the first syllable of the
basic adjective fornn. For example, ཡག་ is the comparativestemof ཡག་པོ་ and མང་ of
མང་̅པོ་ Some adjectiVes, however, have slightly different compaative stems, for examp]e,
ཆེ་ is the compaative stem of ཆེན་པོ་
ComparatiVe adjectival constructions of the type "Kis bigger, whiter, etc. than vr'
haVe the following pattern K+ ལས་ ("than") + adj. comp. plus an optional གི་རེད་.
a. ཕྲུ་གུ་འདི་ལ་ས་དེ་ཡག་གི་རེད།
That childis better than this one. (Than this child, that one is better.)
b. ལུག་ལས་གཡག་ཆེ།
vrak are bigger than sheep.
i̅ The comparative idea can also be expressed by placing the པ་བ་ nominalizing
particlesafter thecomparatiVestem, for example, ཆེ་བ་ ("thebiggerone") .
c. ཕྲུ་གུ་ཆེ་བ་དེ་སློབ་ཕྲུག་རེད།
The bigger (older) child is a student.
d. མོས་ཞུ་མོ་ཡག་པ་དེ་ཉོས་ས་སོང་།
