Il20.2.2 Translation
i̅ The Origin of Shodön [The "Curd" or "Opera" FestiVal] i̅
Shodön is the festival that begins on the 30 th dayi̅of the 6 th month of the Tibetaun
calendar. It goes on for severalweeksafterthat (date) , withartisticperfornmancesand
picnics (being held) in Lhasa. In thei̅past, the custom arose whereby the Tibetan
government heldi̅this opera festival in Drepung monastery. All twelVe opera (literally
"goddess") associations had to gather aunnua]ly at Drepung monastery to perfornm the
operas at this time.
As for (the origin of the) Tibetan opera
The yogin cal]ed Taungdong Gyebo, i̅ (the one) who had constructed mVore than one
huundred ironlink bridgesin Tibet, (began it) in the past in order to pay for the expenses
of the iron bridges. He selected attractive girls and boys with good voices from a work
site at Chushul (south ofLhasa)and organized (them into) a dance troupe. When they
perfornled the operainLhasa, allthepeopleweresuurnrisedi̅andsaidthatitwasasifthe
perfornlers had come from therealm of the gods. They received so much praise from the
public that from that time onward the name "lhamo" ("goddess") came (into use for their
perfornmaunces) A s of now, there (are a number ol) operastoriessuchasDhrowasaungmo,
Nangsaömbum, Sugiñima, Pemeömbar, Chögyenorsaung, IungpoDkönyödöndrup,
Drirnegunden, Gyasabesa, and Rechung.

A long time agoin Mon there wasa king cal]ed Galawangbowho hada queen called
Hashangdümo. One day when the king was going hunting he lost his dog, andat the place
where hewas looking forit, he meta family consisting of an o]dcoupleandavery
beautiful girlwhose namewasDrowasangmo. Assoonastheking saw the girl he felt
extremely happy and summoned the girl to the palace as his bride. After that they had
