the Debön midra, theVabshiaundotheraristocratswhohadextraestatesthathadbeen
obtained without proper title. (In this manner) the large families had to pay extra leVies of
4 —5 ༽ , 000 ke oti̅gain, aund the fami]ies beneath (theml) leVies of seVeralhundredke.
Because or this, the old goVernment got a Very large amount of grain. Afterwards, toward
the end of the Dalai Lama's ]ife, the old grain storage places (of the government) were
basically full. In someregions there was eVen noplace to store all the grain.i̅
i̅ Because the target of thei̅extra grain ]evies was the larger Debön midra (fami]ies,
negative public opinion concerning my father Dzibön Lungshar was disseminated from
one group of the highest officia]s. Nevertheless, becausetheDalaiLamalookedafter
(himl) at that time, he had good supportandnobodywasabletohaurnl (himl) . HoweVer,
because of that, afterwards, as explained below, he met a great misfortune.

. ཙམ་ ]iteral]y means "a little" but here is usedasa convention to convey modesty on the
ེ་མཉམ་གཏོང་ and སྤྲོ་སྐྱིད་ both go with the Verb གནང་, conVeying that they "played together"
and "made merry." ཡང་ཡང་ functions asanadverb. i̅ i̅ i̅
3. སྐིབས་ཤིག་ལ་ is simply a version of the "when" connectiVe. It conveys "at one time" with
respect to the verba] action ་ thus ཕེབས་སྐབས་ཤིག་ལ་ means "at one time when (she) went."
